Bio

Daughter of John Swenson and Bertha Ann Whitely Married Arnold Arthell Walker, 20 April 1921, Provo, Utah, Utah Married Leonard Owen Harris, 1 March 1952 in Elko, Elko, Nevada History. Luella was born Feb 29, 1904, in Leap Year. She was the second child born to John Swenson and Bertha Whitely Swenson. As their ages were close together, Eldon and Luella spent hours playing together. On Feb. 28, two years later her only sister, Nellie was born. The birthdays were celebrated together. For three years the celebration was on Aunt Nell's birthday, but on Leap Year the big day was on Luella's birthday. When Luella was four years old the family moved to Mercur, where Grandpa Swenson helped his brother, Alma run a store. They were there a year and then they moved back to Lindon. She attended school in Lindon. When she was seven years old the family moved to Pleasant Grove, where Grandpa and Grandma managed the store where Chirstensen's store now stands. In the spring of 1912, they again moved back to Lindon; Luella and Eldon drove the cows from Pleasant Grove to the farm in Lindon. Grandpa Swenson raised fruit and vegetables which are packed in a wagon and peddled in Mercur, Magna, Salt Lake, and other places. Grandma and the children would have another load ready to sell when Grandpa came home. Sometimes it was necessary to take two wagons. Often Luella drove the second team on the trip. She graduated from the 8th grade in 1916. So for her first year of high school, she hitched Old Topsy, the horse, to the buggy each morning to go to school, taking hay in the back seat for the noon feeding. During her high school days, she met Arthell Walker ( he was called Thell). They were sweethearts for four years. They were married on April 29, 1921, in Provo, Utah, Utah. Thell's father gave the newlyweds a cow and Grandpa Swenson gave them a cow and six hens; Grandma Swenson gave them some fruit and potatoes. They moved into Will Robbin's home which stood near LeGrand Jarman's home. When berries came on Luella picked berries to pay the nine dollars a month rent. In September they moved into the two-room home of Walker's home under the hill where Arlo A. was born. In the fall of 1924, Thell decided to go to Burley, Idaho to help harvest the crops for his sister and her husband, Florence and Hy Brown. In order to finance the project, the rubber-tired buggy and horse were sold, and also one of the cows. A car was purchased for one hundred and fifty dollars and Thell took off for Idaho. While there he rented a farm. So Luella sold the cow back to Grandpa Walker for sixty dollars and bought a ticket and shipped their furniture to Burley. The winter spent in Idaho was a hard one. It was terribly cold. Thell had no coal and Thell chopped wood. In the morning everything was frozen. The bread had to be put in the oven and thawed before it could be sliced. Thell didn't have a job so the food supply was scant. The weather had warmed up by Jan. 23, 1925, but there was a lot of snow. This was the day Lloyd was born. When Luella needed help Thell walked a mile to get Florence and Hy; then walked a mile to phone to the doctor. When the Doctor got through the snow drifts, Florence had the baby taken care of. During the winter of 1928, the farm Thell had rented was sold so Thell came to Pleasant Grove. Thell bought a piece of land from Grandpa Walker that Perry had - Thell's brother. Thell moved into the two-room house, which was later built on. Here Glade D., Howard L., and Sterling L. were born. Between the years of 1930 and 1940 Luella worked each fall at the Lindon Cannery, and along with the boys she did well papering. through her efforts, most of the homes of Lindon, Pleasant Grove, and Manila were made more beautiful. After a number of years of suffering, Thell died on Feb. 27, 1947. This was another challenge for Luella. But no matter how many troubles and hardships come to her, she shouldered her burdens and carried on. In 1952 she went to the Temple and had the family sealed together by the Holy Priesthood. In 1952 when all the children except Sterling were married, she married Leonard Harris and moved to his home on Lindon Hill. Luella was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, especially in the Relief Society. Her testimony was very strong. Her family was very dear to her and she was continually planning parties to keep them together. She was very hospitable. Never did too many people come for her to feed. Luella passed away on June 15, 1958, having leukemia. She was survived by her husband, five boys, 16 grandchildren, 1 sister and 6 brothers. She was buried in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery by her husband, Thell Walker.
