CARSON, CATHERINE—Catherine Van Slyke was born in Oakland county, Michigan, January 3, 1844. She died at Geneva, Neb., January 25, 1932, at the advanced age of 88 years and 22 days. She was married to Washington Irving Carson, February 16, 1866, just after Mr. Carson's discharge from the army, and they began their life together on a farm near Angola, Ind. In 1872 they moved to Fillmore county, Nebraska, settling on a homestead between Geneva and Fairmont. In 1886 they moved to Geneva. Mrs. Carson was bereaved of her husband February 14, 1925, after a period of companionship covering fifty-nine years, lacking two days. Forty-six of these years were spent at Geneva. Mrs. Carson was the mother of four children, two sons, and two daughters, of whom three are living: Glen I. Carson of Eldora, Ia., Mrs. Millie Hagerty of Muncie, Ind., and Mrs. Clyde Propst of Geneva, with whom she had made her home for many years. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives. Mrs. E. V. Jewell of Geneva is a niece and Arthur Richards of Geneva is a nephew. It is given to but few to live such a long and useful life as Mrs. Carson lived. Converted and uniting with the church very early in life has more than seventy-five year of exemplary Christian living to her credit. She will be remembered as a devoted, self-sacrificing wife, mother and friend; little wonder then that at the sunset of her life she was not only ready but anxious to "disrobe" and to be with her Savior and loved ones who have preceded her. Her final message was, "Tell those who attend my funeral to so live that I may have the joy of greeting them in the eternal world in the sweet by and by." Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. H. Shoaf of the Methodist church Wednesday, January 27, 1932, at the residence. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
