John H. Nicholas "Big John "passed away Saturday Sept. 3, 2011, at his home at the age of 74. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at First Baptist church in Menard. Interment will follow in Rest Haven Cemetery. Eric Kothmann will officiate; Maggie Mae and Rhome Hill will minister in music. John, or "Big John" as he was known, was born Feb. 22, 1937, to Sidney and Eunice (Gatewood) Nicholas in Lyn County. His young life was spent in Brady, Texas. He attended school there and was a member of the Baptist church. He married Billie Jean Hester of Lohn, Texas, on Sept. 20, 1957, in Llano, Texas. They moved from Brady to Menard in 1967. Big John had many trades in his life; he was a welder and mechanic, drove a truck, worked on a pulling unit in the oil field, and worked on a ranch riding and also worked horses. He loved to fish and hunt; and he trained Border Collies. He was always ready to help someone in need. He was a member of the Dutch oven cooks, and helped cook for the Jim Bowie Trail Ride, for Doris and Gene Crisp, and helped cook at several American Legion events. John is preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, Mike McCartney; one brother, Daymon Nicholas; and half-brother J.L. Nicholas. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Billie Jean; two sons, Billy James and John John Nicholas of Menard; three daughters, Sally Jean Hudson and husband Mike of Ranger, Texas, Mary Lou Kinsey and husband Orville of Sterling City and Margret Ann Shores and husband Gary of Abilene, Texas; two grandchildren that he raised, Chelsea and Jason Nicholas; one brother, Billy Joe and wife Millie Nicholas of San Marcos, Texas; three half-brothers, Randy Nicholas of Brownwood, Ricky Nicolas of Bangs, and Wayne Nicholas; three half-sisters, Wanda and Helen of San Antonio, Nadie Jean of Santa Anna; a daughter-in-law, Donna McCartney of Merkel; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
