1905 - 1990 South Lead Cemetery records note that he died April 9, 1990; buried April 14, 1990; age 84 years; Fidler Funeral Chapel; informant - Lakota Gifford, wife - 304 South Mill Street, Lead, SD. Lawrence County burial permit states that Melvin Leroy Gifford died in Deadwood on April 9, 1990. Rapid City Journal (Rapid City, South Dakota), Thursday, April 12, 1990, page 8: Melvin L. Gifford LEAD -- Services for Melvin L. Gifford, 84, of Lead, who died Monday at Northern Hills General Hospital in Deadwood, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of the Northern Black Hills in Deadwood. The Rev. Dick Salmonson will officiate. Burial will be in South Lead Cemetery under the direction of Fidler Funeral Chapel of Lead. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to First Baptist Church. He was born Oct. 10, 1905, in Castlewood to Edwin and Amy (Barnes) Gifford. He grew up and attended grade school at Castlewood. After his father died, he and his brother worked to support the family. Gifford was a butter maker at creameries in Castlewood, Yale and St. Onge. He married Lakota L. LaBau July 11, 1936, at Newcastle, Wyo. He worked for Homestake Mining Co. from 1938 until retiring in 1970 as a diamond driller. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Homestake Veterans Association and Local 7044 of United Steelworkers of America. Survivors include his wife, of Lead; five daughters, Phyllis Sander of Brookings, Rosemary Robertson of Lead; Lenora Haag, of Spearfish, Debra Wakefield of Anchorage, Alaska, and Saralynn Singray of Watertown; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother.
