ND ************* Find A Grave contributor Nancy at KNDKritters: GEORGE GIFFORD FAMILY Morton Prairie Roots 1776-1976; Pages 139 George Gifford, the son of Edward and Kate (Rist) Gifford, was born August 18, 1882 in Waupaca, Wisconsin. He died November, 1942 at Timmer, North Dakota. In November, 1905 he married Jennie Chalmers who was born April 18, 1884 near Gallatin Post Office in Griggs County, North Dakota. Her parents were Alexander and Ellen (Saunders) Chalmers both of whom were born in Scotland near Edinburgh. He came to North Dakota by covered wagon in 1893, with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rist. Her first name was Carrie. They settled in the three Buttes area. Flasher was called Iowa City in the beginning when Jennie taught school there in 1903 - 04. Very few people resided in or near this new town which at that time was only a wide place on the Black Hills Trail. The William F. Berrier store and the Hotel Aunger faced each other on opposite sides of the street. The one - room school was directly north of the hotel. The winter of 1903 - 04 there was lots of snow and bitter cold. Once a howling blizzard whipped up out of nowhere. The men from the store came to school, formed a human chain and piloted the entire group to the safe harbor of the store and hotel were all stayed until the storm ended. Eastern newspapers published a pitiful tale about the poor school ma'am who with a group of pupils perished in the storm. They plaited up big. Later settlers from the East shook hands with Jennie and congratulated her on her survival as she was a rather lively corpse. George Gifford during those years live near the Three Buttes. After he and Jennie were married they lived on the Mike Brown Ranch where he worked. In 1909 they moved to their homestead, 12 miles southeast of Flasher. They had four children: Franklin, Flasher; Lyda, Mrs. A. H. Celley, Mandan; Charles and Ruth are deceased. Besides her children Jennie has seven grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Jennie makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Celley, Mandan. The children are Mavis married to Lawrence Hoff, the son of Joe and Margaret (Zins) Hoff, Flasher. Their children are Todd and Kirk. Janice married Ray Hoff, brother of Lawrence; children: Christine and Brian. Susan married Leo Hoff, brother of Lawrence and Ray; child: Chantell. All live in or near Flasher. Shirley married Ervin Ketterling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Ketterling, Elgin. They live in Lewistown, Montana; children: Lavonne, Debbie, and Mack.
