1918 - 2000 Married July 11, 1936 Lawrence County burial permit states that Lakota Laretta Gifford died on November 27, 2000 in Spearfish at the age of 82 years. Lead Daily Call, Thursday, July 23, 1936, page 1: LABAU-GIFFORD Mrs. E.W. LaBau entertained 24 guests yesterday at her home at an announcement luncheon honoring her daughter, Lakota, whose marriage to Melvin LeRoy Gifford took place secretly at Newcastle, Wyo., on April 11, the Rev. Ralph F. Snyder officiating. After luncheon served at 1 o'clock, the guests enjoyed the diversions of bridge and rummy. Score honors in bridge were won by Mrs. Henry Phillips and Mrs. C.F. Schadel, and rummy gifts went to Mrs. Dan Carlson for high score and Miss Alice Steir for low. The guest of honor received a shower of lovely gifts. Mrs. Gifford, the bride, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.W. LaBau. She grew up in Lead and received her education in the Lead schools. Her husband came to the Black Hills from Watertown. He is a graduate of State college at Brookings, and for the past three years has been the buttermaker at the St. Onge creamery. For the present Mr. and Mrs. Gifford are living in an apartment at the LaBau home on South Mill street. Rapid City Journal (Rapid City, South Dakota), Wednesday, November 29, 2000, page 22: LaKota L. Gifford SPEARFISH -- LaKota L. Gifford, 82, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish. Survivors include five daughters, Phyllis Sander, Brookings, Rosemary Mohr Robertson and Lenora Haag, both of Spearfish, Deborah Wakefield, Anchorage, Alaska, and Saralynn Singrey, Watertown; 16 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 1, at Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead, and one hour before the services at the church. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Calvary Temple Church in Spearfish, with the Rev. Dan Kent officiating. Burial will be in South Lead Cemetery in Lead.
