Bio

Mary Agnes Labaj was born on 21 January of 1878 in Frelsburg, Colorado County. She was the daughter of Jan Labaj (1853-1907) and his wife Anna Poncik Labaj (1853-1949). Her parents "John Labau and Anna Poncik" married 24 November 1874 with Peter V. Gury, Rector of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Frelsburg, Texas officiating. Marriage record filed 11 January 1875 in Colorado County, Texas. Anna's sister Marianna Poncik married in 1878 Michael Labay, brother of John in Frelsburg. The Colorado Citizen (a newspaper published in Colorado County, Texas) reported in their 13 April 1876 edition: "Frelsburg is situated in the northern portion of the County. It is a village of 250 inhabitants, mostly Germans. The Country surrounding the village is a most beautiful and gentile prairie and post oak country settled by honest frugal Germans. This is a very desirable portion of the county for small farmers and stockmen." Mary Agnes' paternal grandparents were Josef Labaj, Sr. (1832-1888) and his wife Marianna Baros Labaj (1822-1891). Her maternal grandparents were Johann Poncik (1820-1885) and his wife Rozina Divin Poncik ( - 1868). In 1871, Mary Agnes' maternal grandfather, widower Johann Poncik (1820-1885) , emigrated from Moravia, Austria to the United States aboard the steamship Frankfurt owned by Norddeutscher Lloyd. On 16 April 1871, under the command of Captain Barre, the steamship Frankfurt departed from Bremen, Germany at the Port of Bremerhaven on the North Sea. The Frankfurt arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana at th e Port of New Orleans on 12 May 1871. Among the passengers were Johann Poncik and his two unmarried daughters Anna and Marianna Poncik and his married daughter Eva Poncik Koreneck and her husband Paul A. Koreneck and their children Eva, Joseph and Anna. The Poncik family first settled in Frelsburg in Colorado County and later moved to the Nada area. In 1874 Anna Poncik married John Labay and in 1878 her sister Marianna Poncik married Michael Labay, John's brother. In 1872, Mary Agnes' paternal grandparents, Joseph Labaj, Sr (1832-1888) and his wife Marianna Barosh Labaj (1822-1901 ), emigrated from Moravia, Austria to the United States aboard the steamship Frankfurt owned by Norddeutscher Lloyd.. In 1871, Mary Agnes' father in law Florian Frnka (1846-1900) and his second wife Veronika Marianna Rozak Frnka (1851-1919) emigrated from Moravia, Austria to the Unied States. See her husband John Frank Frnka's memorial for details of emigration. On 23 June 1896, "Miss Mary Labay and Mr. John Frnka" married with Frederick Neubert, Catholic Priest officiating. Their marriage record filed 27 June 1896 in Colorado County. Mary Agnes Labay's sister Rosa married in 1908 Emil Otto Frnka, John Frank's younger brother. On 11 January 1907, Mary Agnes's father John Labay (1853-1907) , husband of Anna Poncik Labay, died at the age 53 of years in Nada, Colorado County, Texas. From the Weimar Mercury (a newspaper published in Colorado County, Texas), 12 January 1907: Eagle Lake, Jan. 12. ---John Labay, an influential citizen of the Nada section, fell from a wagon loaded with baled hay yesterday, the wheels passing over his breast, rendering him unconscious, from which he died in a few hours. Mr. Labay owned and conducted a cotton gin at Nada, this county, and was quite well to do. On 25 November 1960, Mary Agnes Labay Frnka (1878-1960) , widow of John Frank Frnka, died at the age of years in Laughlin Hospital in Eagle Lake in Colorado County, Texas. From the Colorado Citizen (a newspaper published in Colorado County, Texas) 1 December 1960 Mrs. John F. Frnka Dies Suddenly; Last Rites Saturday Last rites for Mrs. John F. Frnka of Nada, mother of Mrs. Vera Mae Drozd of Columbus, were held in El Campo Saturday followed by requiem high mass a St. Mary's Catholic church in Nada. Burial was in the Nada Catholic cemetery. Rosary for Mrs. Frnka was recited Friday evening in the Triska Funeral home. Born in Frelsburg Jan 21, 1878, she was formerly Mary Agnes Labay, daughter of John and Annie Poncik Labay. Mrs. Frnka was stricken suddenly on the evening of Thanksgiving day and died in Laughlin hospital shortly afterwards. She had enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Frnka, in Eagle Lake. Revs. A. W. Didner of Eagle Lake, Alex J. Kraus of Columbus and E. J. Bily of Nada officiated. Pallbearers were Beno and Jimmy J. Frnka, Arnold Holub, Charles Labay, Edwin Drozd and Allen Daehne. Survivors include the son, J. T. of Eagle Lake and another son, Leo A. of San Antonio and 3 daughters, Mrs. Drozd of Columbus and Mrs. Leona Holub and Mrs. Virginia Dowell of Houston; also 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Surviving brothers are Joe Labay of Garwood, Mike and George Labay of Nada, Paul and Robert of El Campo and Cecil of Wharton and surviving sisters are Mrs. Annie Daehne of Flatonia and Mrs. Frances Safar of El Campo. Her husband died in 1953 and a son, Ben T., died in 1937. The couple lost 2 infant daughters. Children of Mary Agnes Labay Frnka and John Frank Labay: a daughter Mary Frnka (1887-1900); a daughter Anna Frnka (1898-1898); a son Leo Allen Frnka (1900-1975); a daughter Leona Mae Frnka Holub (1902-1978) who in 1921 married Arnold Henry Holub (1897-1968); a son Benjamin Thomas Frnka (1906-1987) who married Amelia maiden name unknown ; a son James Theodore Frnka (1913-1995); who in 1936 married Lillian Agnes Balajka Frnka (1913-1998); a daughter Vera Mae Frnka Drozd who married Edwin Joseph Drozd, Sr.; and a daughter Virginia Frnka Dowell
