Bio

Stratford Courier Thursday, May 11, 1939 Obituary Mrs. Carl Bergman Funeral services for Mrs. Carl Bergman were held in the family home Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and in the Baptist church at 2 o'clock. The Rev. A. E. Appelquist, of Rockford, Ill., a former pastor of the church, brought the message in the church and sang, "Sunrise Tomorrow." A ladies quartette, composed of Mesdames Oscar Borg, Albert Hubner, Ralph Freese and Miss Vernice Johnson, sang "The Eastern Gate," and "Goodnight and Good Morning." Interment was in Oakwood cemetery, north of Stratford. The casketbearers were six nephews of deceased: Carl Wahman, Clifford and Lloyd Johnson, Alvie and Roy Bergman. Christine Johnson, daughter of Jonas and Carrie Johnson, was born in Buroker, Helsingland, Sweden, on July 16, 1864, and died in her home here, May 2, 1939, at the age of 74 years, 10 months, 14 days. At the age of six years, she came to this country with her mother, two sisters and two brothers in 1869, her father having died in Sweden. Her early life was spent with her mother on a farm, northeast of Stratford, until she was united in marriage with Carl Bergman. To this union six children were born. She was preceded in death by two children, Edward and Elsie. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, one son, Everett, and three daughters, Mrs. Tilghman Ferlen, Mrs. Julius Johnson and Mrs. Roy Carlson, all of Stratford. Two brothers and one sister survive: John T. Johnson, of Omaha, Nebr., Nels L. Johnson, of Stratford, and Mrs. Carrie Hollander, of Logan. There are 11 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews, other relatives and a host of friends. She was a true mother whose children rise up and call her blessed. A devout lover of her home and dear ones, her thoughts were ever of their welfare. For over forty years, she was a member of the Stratford Baptist church and so long as her health permitted, she had joy in taking part in the various activities of the church. She was ever patient and uncomplaining during her long illness, having been bedfast the past eight months. On Tuesday morning, May 2, she quietly slipped into the kingdom of heaven, leaving behind the memory of her affectionate life forever engraved upon the hearts of her loved ones.
