Jewell Record Oct. 1, 1953 Nels L. Johnson, 86, Died Last Thursday Nels L. Johnson, 86, longtime Stanhope and Stratford community resident, died Thursday at the Hamilton County Public Hospital in Webster City. Funeral services were held last Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Stratford with Rev. C. F. Schmidt of Stanhope officiating. Burial was made in the Oakwood Cemetery near Stratford. Nels Louis Johnson, son of Jonas and Carrie Johnson, was born in Buroker, Helsingland, Sweden on August 10, 1867. He came to the United States at the age of 2, coming here with his mother. They settled in the Stratford community where he was reared and educated. He was united in marriage on March 6, 1907 to Hilda Sophia Bergman. The couple started housekeeping on a farm between Stanhope and Stratford. They farmed there until 1935 when they moved to Kamrar, where they farmed for two years. They then retired and moved to Stratford. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, who died December 1, 1947, one brother and three sisters. Surviving are two sons and four daughters: Lloyd Johnson of Dayton, Clifford Johnson of Stratford, Mrs. Valmah (Eleanor) Clawe of Algona, Mrs. J. C. (Delma-Johnson) Spitler of Webster City, Mrs. Ray (Ruth-Johnson) Nail of Eage Grove; and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Johnson was a member of the Baptist Church in Stratford.
