A member of the Edward Martin Company. Thomas Normington was born 26 December 1818 in Burnley, Lancashire, England to Mathew Normington and Anne Smith. He was the oldest of four children, Mary, Jan Ann, and Mathew. Thomas was a weaver of cotton and worked at the cotton mill. When he was 21 he married Maria Jackson 29 Sept 1839 at Altham, Lancashire, England. For a time they lived with her parents in Whalley. Thomas worked at the new power looms as a weaver. They had ten children but only three lived to be adults. Thomas was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints 30 Nov 1840. Maria was baptized 21 November 1840. They attended the Burnley branch. They immigrated in 1856. They left Burnley and went 30 miles to Liverpool and sailed on the ship, Horizon with 856 other Saints. arriving in Boston, Massachusetts 30 June 1856. Five of their children came; a sixth child was born on he plains. They arrived in Iowa City on July 8th. They had to construct their own handcart and joined the Edward Martin Company 28 July 1856 and headed west. They left Florence 27 August, a few days behind the Willie Company. It became colder in September and they suffered from exposure, lack of food, and hard work with the handcarts. Thomas and his sons, Ephraim Robert, Daniel and a baby died on the plains, where they were buried. Maria and their three daughters arrived in the Salt Lake Valley 30 Nov 1856. Contributor: #48463719
