From the book, Seward County Nebraska 1982: "John Ray, the son of John Morse and Maude Aura (Davis) Wilson Hughes, was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. He moved to Seward as an infant, where his father became a prominent contractor. John was a Seward High graduate in 1911. A large man, he stood six foot and weighed well over 200 pounds. John was an architectural millwork carpenter for John M. Hughes and Sons from his high school days until 1920, when he became a building superintendent for Standard Oil of Indiana. On January 4, 1930, he accepted the position of Plant Superintendent at Hughes Brothers, Inc., a position he held until his death. He married his high school sweetheart, Lizzie Jane Foster, in a Wilbur, Nebraska ceremony on April 25, 1917. John and Lizzie were zealous fishermen, spending many hours at their cabin on the Blue River near Beaver Crossing. On nights when they weren't fishing, you would probably find them calling a square dance or dancing in one. John was a Past President of the Nebraska Square Dance Association. John was a dedicated member of the Seward Volunteer Fire Department and Seward School Board, on which he served as President for several years. In addition he was a member of the Evangelical United Bretheran Church. An active lodge member, he was a Shriner, Past Master of Oliver Lodge 38, member of OES Chapter 156 and Royal Neighbors. Always one who could turn a story, john also enjoyed woodworking and playing the piano. He was an avid football fan, rarely missing a Nebraska or Seward High Game. John and Lizzie were the parents of three sons, John Foster, Max Lewis, and Richard Treavor. "
