1910 - 2001 JUDGE The Black Hills Pioneer newspaper of July 10, 2001 reported, "Memorial services for Clarence P. Cooper, 90, will be held July 15 at 1 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal in Lead. He died April 6, 2001. Clarence was born in Lead in 1910. He maintained his legal residence there until his retirement in 1975. He left Lead to attend college at the University of Nebraska for an AB in 1931 and a law degree in 1934 and another time while serving in the Navy during World War II. He practiced law in Lead and became active in politics, serving a term as States Attorney and County Judge. When WWII erupted, Judge Cooper accepted a commission in the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant and later was assigned to the USS Kalinin Bay, an escort carrier. His ship was involved in the Battle of Leyta Gulf known as the largest sea battle in history. After the war, he retired from the Navy as a commander and returned to his hometown again to practice law. His honors and offices are many. He held a Phi Beta Kappa Key and served as City Attorney for both Lead and Central City, States Attorney for a second term and as Circuit Judge as the result of a governor's appointment. Clarence Cooper married his college sweetheart in 1935. Survivors include three daughters, Diana Cooper Gilman of Watsonville, Calif., Sarah Cooper Lain of Anthem, Ariz. and Martha Cooper McTurnam of Denham, England; and four grandchildren. Memorial gifts may be made to the Homestake Opera House Retoration, to Christ Church in Lead or a charity of the donor's choice."
