Sept. 27, 1885 Jan. 12, 1970 Gone But Not Forgotten South Lead Cemetery records state that Arthur Ernest Cooper died of acute myocardial infarction; buried Jan. 15, 1970; funeral under the direction of McColley Funeral Home; nearest relative or friend - son, Clarence P. Cooper of 608 Houston in Lead. Lead Daily Call newspaper, Tuesday, January 13, 1970, page 6: Long-Time Lead Resident Dies Unexpectedly Monday Arthur E. Cooper, a resident of Lead for over 78 years, died unexpectedly Monday evening in his home at 602 Sawyer St. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church in Lead with Rev. Fenton Kovic, rector, officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in South Lead cemetery under the direction of the McColley Funeral Home. The body will lie in state until noon Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for Christ Church. Cooper was born in a sod house near Blunt, Sept. 27, 1885 and moved to Lead at the age of seven with his parents, John and Sarah Cooper. He attended the local schools and was married June 30, 1909 to the former Anna Lund with the ceremony performed in the family home which the couple purchased before their marriage. Starting to work at the age of 15, Cooper was employed by the Homestake Mining lCompany until his retirement Oct. 1, 1950 with nearly a half-century of continuous employment. Although he started in the mill, most of his employment was with the mechanical department where he served as a long-time hoisting engineer. Active in the Christ Church, Cooper served as a vestryman and lay reader at various times. He also held membership in the Homestake Veterans Association and was a 50-year member of the Golden Star Lodge No. 9, A.F. & A.M. He was preceded in death by his wife, April 5, 1969. Survivors include a son, Circuit Judge Clarence P. Cooper, Lead; a daughter, Mrs. Jan (Lois) V. Gunn, Northbrook, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Mrs. John (Sarah) Nicolai, Lexington, Ky.; Mrs. Philip (Diana) Gilman, Santa Ana, Calif.; Martha Cooper, St. Louis, Mo.; Richard, Steven, Judy, Jamie Gunn, all of Northbrook; one great grandson, Timothy J. Nicolai; a brother, Fred C. Cooper, Lead; and a sister, Mrs. Tom (Edith) Harvey, Kirkland, Wash. Lead Daily Call, Thursday, January 15, 1970, page 6: Arthur E. Cooper Funeral Is Held Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon in Lead for Arthur E. Cooper, pioneer resident, who died Monday at his home. Rev. Fenton Kovic conducted the final rites at Christ Episcopal Church with requiem organ music played by Mrs. Donald Whipple. Serving as pallbearers were Kenneth Lee, Robert Campbell, Ronald Fielder, W.S. Raybourn, William Konola and Cedric Gust. Interment was in the South Lead cemetery under the direction of McColley Funeral Home with graveside rites conducted by the Golden Star Lodge No. 9, A.F.&A.M. Lead Daily Call, Thursday, January 15, 1970, page 5: Mrs. Jan (Lois) V. Gunn, Northbrook, Ill., arrived Tuesday night by plane at the Rapid City airport. She was met by Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth M. Lee, Lead and brought to Lead. Mrs. Gunn, daughter of Arthur E. Cooper, Lead, was called here by his unexpected death Monday at his home. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon in Christ Church Episcopal, Lead, with the Rev. Fenton Kovic officiating. Homestake Veterans' Association records note the following: Arthur E. Cooper Joined the Homestake Veterans' Association on April 20, 1931 Born at Blunt, South Dakota on September 27, 1885 Married to Miss Anna Lund on June 30, 1909 (deceased April 5, 1969) Children - 2: Judge Clarence P.
