REMAINS OF FORMER CITIZEN ARRIVE IN CITY TODAY NOON Services held this afternoon for W. L. Chesnutt at First Methodist Church in presence of many friends. The remains of W. L. Chesnutt, better known to the citizenship of Lufkin and Angelina County as "Uncle Bill," arrived today noon from Weed, Calif., where he passed away at the ripe old age of 77, and were carried to the Humason-Berry undertaking parlors, later conveyed to the First Methodist Church, where funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. A. Long, pastor of that denomination, with interment following in Glendale Cemetery. The deceased, prior to his departure for California, had made Lufkin his home and it was here that he spent the greater portion of a useful life, one that was productive of the raising of as fine a family of boys and girls as can be found within the confines of the nation, all of whom have been a credit to Lufkin and the pride of those towns and cities that claim them for citizens. "Uncle Bill" was a wit and humorist, always the center of a crowd of admirers who appreciate his ability to create a laugh at the expense of his friends, in which there was no malice and no after hurt. Genial, lively, always in a good humor, his was a personality that had made him one of the popular citizens of any community, and his ready smile and infectious laugh were sadly missed in Lufkin with his departure for California, where he spent his declining days with his oldest daughter, Mrs. A. L. Davis. His was a gentle, kindly nature, and the great love of his children was fitting attestation of the respect they had for him and the exemplary way in which he ruled that household of boys and girls. He was a most loyal member of the Masonic lodge, where he was looked up to with high regard by the entire membership of that organization. The remains were accompanied to Lufkin today by his daughter, Mrs. Lallie Davis, with a large circle of friends being present to meet the corpse and those in attendance. The funeral services were held in the presence of a large number of friends at the church, with a long funeral cortege following the remains to Glendale, where they were interred by the side of his wife, who preceded him many years ago.
