It was initially believed that Robert was the son of Lavina (Crow) Elzy because he is shown as living in her household in the 1860 census for Moultrie County, Illinois. (she being listed as a widow farmer, Robert as a farmhand, both being shown as being born in KY.) We found Lavina being married to a Silas Elzy in Bullitt County, KY 1850 census. Robert, however was listed in another household. Robert and Silas were the only two males in that county in 1850 with the surname Elzy, so it is very likely that they are related in some way, probably brothers rather than father/son. Robert was born in 1840, so the unless Silas was married prior to his marriage to Maria Caswell, or Robert was born out of wedlock, then he is probably not the son of Silas. Since he did appear in the 1860 Census of Moultrie County, IL, more than likely he is somehow closely related to Silas. James C. Elzy and Rebecca Caswell are more likely the parents of Robert Elzy, though the only "proof" to this is the fact that the James Elzy household is the only one we have found to date in early tax records with a son fitting the age of Robert Elzy.
