He sometimes mentioned winter classes at a "Tilford Academy" and at a "Blairstown Seminary." This points up his lifelong interest in more "learning." He was an avid reader. His first away-from-home job was manager of the Northern Grain Company elevator in Watkins. Later, he acquired a 160 acre farm a few miles northeast of Blairstown. He raised purebred Duroc hogs and had customers in and out of Iowa. Always interested in community affairs, he served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Benton County State Bank in Blairstown, Iowa, prior to the family adventures into the Dakota prairies. Along with the family, he was caught up with "South Dakota fever" in 1909, and acquired prairie land ten miles west of Huron. He sold the Iowa farm, built a new farmstead on the prairie farm, and moved his family to South Dakota in 1910. He established a purebred Hereford cattle herd which he maintained for years. Later, he was president of the Iowa Hereford Association. When the Kimms moved to Dakota, the country was still in a primitive state. He pushed for and obtained a mail route and telephone service for the farm community, both out of Wolsey, six miles away, a long distance in those days. In 1916, he "gave up" on South Dakota, sold the farm and bought a farm near Coon Rapids, Iowa. In 1918, he bought a farm near Guthrie Center so that the children could attend "town school." He was an officer of local agricultural organizations and continued as a purebred livestock breeder. During the "great depression" he lost the farm, moved to Benton County, and later acquired another farm near Vinton. He retired to Vinton in 1943.
