Dr. Marie Gilbreth Tefft Sailor Dr. Marie Gilbreth Tefft Sailor, a pioneer as a woman dentist in the specialty of preventive dentistry in Tennessee and nationally, died November 24, 1990 at Parkview Hospital, Nashville, following a brief illness. She was 94. A 1918 graduate of Vanderbilt School of Dentistry as its only female student during her four yeas and one of only three female students in its history, she spent a year in general practice in her hometown, Lawrenceburg, TN, After post graduate study of periodontia at Lasalle Institute, Chicago she became an associate of Dr. Justin D. Towner in Memphis, founder and first Dean of the University of Tennessee School of Dentistry, an international pioneer leader in the development of preventive dentistry. In 1926 she married Edward Creel Tefft, a prominent Memphis banker who was to help shape the basic policies of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. From 1946 she was in independent practice of periodontia in Nashville until her retirement in 1967 to marry Colonel Vance Laird Sailor. She was a former officer of the American Association of Women Dentists and the Tennessee Association of Women Dentists; a member of the Association Dentaire International; The American Dental Association, the Tennessee Dental Association, and the Nashville Dental Association. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, and the Armed Forces Officer's Wives Association. Dr Sailor was the daughter of Captain William J. Gilbreath and Margaret Hollingsworth Fleming of Lawrenceburg. She is survived by one son, Edward Creel Tefft, Jr., of San Miguel De Allende, Mexico; two grandsons, Edward C. Tefft, III; Clark K. Tefft, Atlanta. A memorial service at Christ Church, Nashville, will be announced at a later date. A private interment service will be announced at a later date,
