Caroline "Carrie" Mary Shirley was born in 1898 in Fish Haven, Idaho to Thomas and Mary Alice Shirley. She had two sisters, Neva and Lillie, and one brother named Harold, who died as a baby. Carrie's father Thomas Shirley was born in South Africa but was of English descent. Thomas was just a baby when his parents joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and made their way to the Utah Territory in 1858. Her mother, Mary Alice Heyworth, was a British convert to the LDS church and arrived in the Utah Territory in 1891. Carrie and her family lived in the Bear Lake area until 1903 when they moved to Rexburg, Idaho. In 1910, the Shirley family moved to Idaho Falls. In 1916 her older sister Neva married Charles Frank Weakley in Bonneville County. In 1917, Carrie's mother took her younger sister Lillie, left her father and ran off with Harry Conklin, a teacher who was boarding with the Shirley family. (Carrie later used both the last names of Shirley and Conklin.) Carrie married John Benjamin Edwards on 20 December 1919 in Bingham County, Idaho. Census records state that in 1920, she and John resided in the home of her widowed mother-in-law Sarah in Idaho Falls, Idaho. John worked as a laborer, and Carrie was unemployed. By the 1930 Census, Carrie and John were living in Salem, Oregon (on State Street). They had living with them in their household John's brother Earl and Earl's wife Mabel. John was working as a guard at the State Prison and Carrie was working as a picker at a seed factory. Carrie's father Thomas Shirley was living in Salem during this time period as well. He died in Salem in 1937. By 1935, Carrie and John had moved back to Idaho Falls. The 1940 Census records they lived at 450 West 17th Street in Idaho Falls. John's mother Sarah lived with them, and John's brother Earl and his wife Mabel lived on West 17th Street as well. John was working as a repairman and Carrie was working as a pea picker. John died in 1977 and Carrie died at the age of 80 in 1978. They were buried together in the Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls. Census records reveal John and Carrie never had any children. contributed by MTM
