Bio

Alfred A. Burnett was born near Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky in 1812. The county lines were quite different then. Edmonson County is purely a guess. Oral tradition (not proven) says his great great grandfather had arrived in Savannah, Chatham Co, GA about 1735 on one of the first debtor ships from England. Alfred moved to Biloxi, Harrison Co, MS where he met Julia Jane Seaman. They married about 1838 in Mississippi. Alfred and Julia had 10 children, seven of them born in Mississippi: Sherrod Valesco Burnett b: 18 Mar 1839 Melinda Burnett b: 1841 (died young) Nancy Burnett b: 1842 (died young) Dorinda Burnett (Morrogh) b: 17 Dec 1845 Sidnah Virginia Burnett (Gilley) b: 17 Aug 1847 Loren Elbert Burnett b: 4 Jul 1848 William Burnett b: Jul 1850 Alfred and Julia moved to Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana and had three more children: Elizabeth Burnett (Gilley) b: Jan 1856 Isabelle Burnett (Tullis) b: 1 Jul 1860 James Jefferson Burnett b: 10 Mar 1865 NOTE: My grandmother gave me a handwritten genealogy that said his name was William Alfred Burnett; however, a document relating to his estate was found by Michael Burnett in 2013, revealing that he signed his name as Alfred A. Burnett. His original gravestone was washed away in a hurricane. A descendant replaced the stone but put an incorrect birth year. Julia Jane is probably also buried here and her gravestone was washed away and not replaced. Another contributor has placed her burial in Old Bilbo Cemetery. According to the Southwest Louisiana Genealogical Society, Inc. there is NO record of Julia Burnett being buried in Old Bilbo Cemetery.
