Joe Steward was born July 2, 1915, in the Blair House in Weatherford, Custer County, Okla., and moved to the Three Corners area in Roger Mills County as a young boy. Here he grew up on the family farm just west of Leedy, Okla. He attended Three Corners' one-room country schoolhouse and graduated from Liberty Center High School in 1934. His dream was to go to Oklahoma A&M, now Oklahoma State. He attended one year, but the hardships of the depression era forced him to quit and look for work. He enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps and served in Company 1813 and worked on civil construction projects near the Lake Murray area south of Ardmore, Okla. It was here that he met Lucy LaVona Morris and married her April 2, 1935, on her 21st birthday. Joe began his career in the oil and gas industry around 1936 and worked at numerous jobs as he worked his way up in the oil drilling business. In 1947, he went to work for Morris and Hamilton Drilling Co. By 1956 he had moved up to Drilling Superintendent when they sold out to Continental Marine and was Drilling and Production Superintendent when he left in 1962. He spent 2 years with Houston Natural Gas and in 1964 went to work for Ames Oil and Gas and was Manager of Exploration and Operations when he retired in Houston in 1974. During Joe's 38 years in the oil industry and his 62 years of marriage to LaVona, they lived in Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Kentucky. They had seven children; 24 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren. Joe Steward died July 8, 2000, at the Texas Medical Center Hospice in Houston. Having lost his wife LaVona on February 24, 1998, he is survived by daughter, Shirley Yvonne and husband, Bob Max Zetzman of Sweetwater; son, Ronald Joe and wife Dorothy Leigh of Sugarland; daughter, Gueydon Thurber of Horseshoe Bay; son, Clyde Ross and wife Maria Michele of Lake Jackson; son, Sam William and wife Gwendolyn Kay of Hurst; son Dan Brent and wife Gilda Kay of Woodlands; and daughter, Karen Yevette and husband Larry Mike Bloodsworth of Tyler.
