H. L. W. Spain ended his life by cutting his throat with a razor. He did not die until several hours afterward. During the past year he had lost his voice owing to a paralysis of the vocal chords. Deceased was well known during the early days, having served as private secretary to Governor Roberts and married a daughter of the Governor. He was also chief clerk to Secretary of State Bowman and held other clerical position in the Government. He was a member of the First Texas Mounted Rifles during the Confederacy.
