Bio
Mary was born in Pommern, Prussia, on July 18, 1837. She married August Hanneman on May 22, 1862. They immigrated to Milwaukee, WI, in 1873 and lived there one year before moving to Decorah, Iowa. Four years later they came to Dakota Territory and made claim to a quarter of land in Section 10 of LeRoy township. Mary lived the rest of her life on that homestead and raised her family there. Her obituary from a Madison paper says, "Mrs. Hanneman was the mother of eight children of whom six are still living, and with their aged father mourn the loss of this good woman who cared for them thru weary years of shadow and sunshine." Mary died suddenly at her home as the result of heart trouble and the infirmities of old age. Her body laid in state at the Hanneman homestead until her funeral January 10, 1925 at Lake Madison Lutheran Church. During that time a traditional German wake was held. Among the guests at the funeral were Emil Hannamann of Blue Earth, MN, a nephew of August, and Mary's brother, Herman, of Chicago.
