August was born in Pommern, Prussia. The exact community is not yet known. His father was Freidrich Wilhelm Hannamann and his mother's name is not known. His mother died when August was 12 or 13. Freidrich remarried in 1849 to Wilhelmina Kobs. August's sister, Maria, immigrated to Decorah, Iowa in 1868. His father and his second wife and five half-siblings immigrated in 1872, first to Decorah, Iowa, and later to Blue Earth, MN. August married Mary Balfanz in Pommern, Prussia, on May 22, 1862. They immigrated to the US with three children, Hannah, Herman, and Augusta in 1873. His brother Karl came in 1973 also. August and Karl and their families spent the first year in America at Milwaukee. They then went to Decorah, Iowa and were there for four years. August made a trip out to Dakota Territory to find land for a claim. He picked out a piece he like and returned to Decorah to bring out the family. In 1878 they came across Iowa in a covered wagon, driving their cattle and horses. They ferried across the Sioux River near Dell Rapids and continued to what was then part of Minnehaha county. The claim he had chosen had been jumped and the family camped at Lake Madison while August chose another piece of land. They lived in the covered wagon on the claim until August was able to get a sod house built. It is said that he broke the ground to plant crops with an axe. They lived for two years in the sod house while August constructed a frame house, hauling the lumber from Luverne, MN. He lived on that homestead all the rest of his life, except for the last year when he lived with his daughter, Minnie Gruenhagen, near Wentworth. He was senile during his last year. August and Mary had one son, Herman, and five daughters, Hannah, Augusta, Louise (Lizzie), Wilhelmina (Minnie), and Ida. He was a charter member of St. Peter's German Lutheran Church at Wentworth. It was believed that August was the oldest resident of Lake County, being just several days short of being 100 years old. August never learned to speak English. Funeral services were held at the home of Minnie Gruenhagen and at St. Peter's Lutheran Church.
