Funeral Booklet Anna Elizabeth Wilder Elizabeth was born April 22, 1902 at Crofton, NE to Louis & Anna McKee Merchen, and then came to South Dakota with her family in 1916. She attended grade school in Nebraska, high school in Witten, and teachers college at Aberdeen and Spearfish. Elizabeth was married to W.R. (Bill) Wilder at White River and lived there until moving to Pierre in 1937, when he took a job with the State of South Dakota. Elizabeth taught seven years in the Mellette County rural schools and served one term as Mellette County Auditor. She was deputy register of deeds of Hughes County for 12 years, and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 14 years, retiring in 1970. She was member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, Capital City Chapter of Eastern Star in Pierre and Frontier Rebekah Lodge of White River, and Pierre Woman's Club. Elizabeth was initiated into the Order of the Eastern Star Capital City Chapter #39 on June 13, 1947. She received her 50 year OES certificate and pin three years ago. Elizabeth was a member who worked behind the scenes with her Eastern Star friends on various committees and served as needed for her chapter in earlier days of her life. Elizabeth, 99, a former longtime resident of Pierre, SD, died Friday, May 4, 2001, Hillcrest Care Center, Wayzata, MN. Surviving were 2 daughters, Doris and husband Robert Martelle of Fullerton, CA and Faye Walcher of Whittier, CA; one son, Lynn Wilder and wife Velma of Minnetonka, MN, nine grandchildren, 15 great-grand children; one sister, Esther Matz of New Underwood, SD; and 2 brothers, Harry Merchen of Philip, SD and Louis Merchen of Rapid City, SD. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 4 sisters, 6 brothers, and one grandson. Funeral Services were held May 19, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pierre, So. Dakota with the Rev. Roger Easland officiating. Gloria Merriam was the organist and Nancy Thomas was the vocalist. Casket Bearers were Harry Merchen, Jr., Ralph Matz, Dave Merchen, Mark Martelle, Chuck Walcher, and Doug Wilder. She is buried at the Riverside Cemetery in Pierre, SD. ***Please note the following from contributor Dave: married 25 Dec 1921 Mellette County, South Dakota.
