Esther Louise Matz passed away on December 30, 2010, at the age of 96 at her home in New Underwood, SD. Esther Merchen was born April 8, 1914 to Louis and Anna (McKee) Merchen in Crofton, Nebraska. She graduated from White River High School in 1932, and, in 1934, married Christian Adam Matz in Rapid City. They had six children. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. They lived in several places in South Dakota before moving to New Underwood in 1952. She was a cook at several establishments. She and Chris were owners/operators of the New Underwood Locker Plant. She enjoyed ranching, cooking, flowers, and reading. Her family especially remembers her "biscuits" and "dough cakes". She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and Guild for over 50 years. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and housed many future NUHS graduates while they attended school. She welcomed any friends or relatives who dropped by and made sure no one went away hungry. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Survivors include Sadie(Louis) Heslin, Wesley Chapel, FL; Berniece (Ardell) Arney, New Underwood, SD; Mary Ann Price, Rapid City, SD; Gene (Tula) Matz, Tampa, FL; Ralph (Gayle) Matz, Brookings, SD; Alice Hendrickson, Kennewick, WA; 28 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren. She was the last survivor of 14 siblings and was also preceded in death by her husband, Christian Matz in 1997, her parents, 2 sons-in-law : Marshall "Tony" Price and Allen Hendrickson, three grandchildren: Candy Manning, Chris Heslin and Nancy Anderson, and one great-grandchild, Jamie Nichole Arney. Visitation will be at St.John's Catholic Church in New Underwood Wednesday from 5:30-7 pm with a rosary service at 7 pm. Visitation will continue one hour before services Thursday at the church in Rapid City Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:30 pm, Thursday, Jan. 6, at St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church on Adams Street in Rapid City with Father Bill Zandri as celebrant. Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Autism Society of the Black Hills or to Hospice of the Hills.
