Hill City --- Funeral services for Albert James Merchen will be held 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Little White Church. Burial will be in Hill City Cemetery under direction of Behrens Mortuary, Rapid City. Merchen died Friday as the result of a motor vehicle accident near Wright, Wyo. He was born May 6, 1904, at Crofton, Neb., and came to South Dakota with his parents, Louis and Anna Merchen, at age 12. They lived in the Winner area. He married Emma D. Beard of Norris, Aug. 14, 1932, at Winner. They operated a general store at Blackpipe until moving to Rapid City in 1941. In 1963 they moved to Hill City. He was engaged in construction work before being married and after moving to Rapid City worked in the forest skidding logs and for South American Fruit Co., Pacific Fruit Co., Fairmont Creamery and Buckingham Transportation. He operated a Standard service station and apartment house in Hill City, and at the time of his death was employed by Schock Concrete Co. in Wyoming. He was a member of the Rapid City Moose Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Emma at Hill City; eight children; three sisters, Elizabeth Wilder of Pierre, Esther Matz, New Underwood, and Carol Nyffler, Rushville, Neb.; four brothers, Harry of Kadoka, Louis Jr. of Nemo, Leslie, New Underwood, and Donald, Rapid City; also 20 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
