Marvin Floyd Shimek was born to Michael and Lillian (Godden) Shimek on December 19, 1924 on his family's homestead in Marsland, Nebraska. He grew up in and around the Marsland area and graduated from Marsland High School in 1942. After high school Marvin worked in Alliance at Montgomery Ward and later worked for his Aunt Nora as a Ranch Hand in Lost Springs, Wyoming. Marvin later returned to the Marsland area and began his career as a track-maintenance laborer for the Burlington Railroad. In 1961 Marvin and Nan C. Keas were married; three children were born to the couple: John Douglas, Emily Marie and Paul William. Marvin retired from the Burlington railroad after 40 years of service. During his retirement Marvin enjoyed auctions, raising cattle with son Paul and was an avid coin and treasure collector. He also enjoyed visiting sister Ruth with whom he was extremely close. Marvin spend his days tending his cows and garden and loved long walks in the morning and an occasional Saturday yard sale. Marvin died on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Ponderosa Nursing Home in Crawford. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents Michael and Lillian Shimek. Survivors include sister Ruth Elliott of Alliance, son John Shimek of Greeley, CO., daughter Emily Marie and son-in-law Brian Westphal of Johnstown, CO., son Paul William and wife Robin from Crawford; grandchildren, Kane Gentry Nixon, Kassondra Paige Shimek, Michael Paul Shimek, Ryan Shimek and Bob Westphal.
