Bio

2nd child of Jacob and Anna Schreiber-Pennartz Sr. Eleanor Pennartz (Agnes Mary), who passed away on December 21, 1998, less than a month short of her 92nd birthday, had been a member of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word since 1923. Born Jan. 7, 1907, in Windthorst, Texas to Annie (Schreiber) of Leavenworth, Kansas and Jacob Pennartz of Weert, Holland. English was her first spoken language and German was her second. Following novitiate in the Congregation, Sr. Eleanor professed first vows in 1925 and perpetual vows in 1930. During this period she prepared for her ministry in the field of education, where she served for an entire lifetime. Her B.A. degree in English and German from Incarnate Word College and in later years, studies in Pastoral Theology and Library Science enabled her to serve effectively in each of her teaching assignments in the Texas schools. Beginning her teaching apostolate at St. Cecilia's School, San Antonio, she served at other San Antonio Schools such as St. Patrick's. Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Ann School, Incarnate Word High School and St. Peter, Prince of Apostles. Moving out of town for some years, she served at Immaculate Conception and St. Mary's School, Rockport, LA. then to Mt. Carmel Academy, Fort Worth, St. Mary's School, Windthorst, Texas, her home town, and at Sacred Heart Academy and Our Lady of Guadalupe School, Del Rio, Texas. She later served as librarian at Incarnate Word Convent, San Antonio for a number of years. A gentle and serene person throughout her life in community and among her students, Sr. Eleanor endeared herself to all who knew her or were the recipients of her many kindnesses. Always a lady, with a dignified manner, she never really grew old, always abreast of current affairs and aware of what was happening in people's lives, she was always in touch with those around her. One of her great joys in religious life was that of having her blood sister Mary Claude, also a teacher, join her in the community. Sr. Eleanor celebrated her Silver Jubilee in 1950, her Golden Jubilee in 1975 and her Diamond Jubilee in 1985. Buried at Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word Cemetery.
