Luella E. Wortman, 87, of Wood River died Sunday, April 24, 2011, at her home. Luella was born Dec. 25, 1923, at Elyria to Paul and Mary (Ciemny) Swanek. Luella was preceded in death by her husband, John Wortman. Survivors are: sons and daughter-in-law, Ronald Wortman of Wood River and John and Jane Wortman of Boelus; daughters and son-in-law, Kathleen Wortman and Louie of Grand Island, Dorothy Wortman of Wood River and Patricia and Daniel Adam of Hildreth; brother, Melvin Scwanek of Richmond, Calif; four grandsons, three granddaughters and eight great-grandchildren. Luella grew up and attended rural school near Elyria. She married John J. Wortman on Nov. 20, 1944, at St. Mary's Church in Wood River. The couple lived west of Alda until 1963 when they moved to Wood River. Luella worked at the Good Samaritan Society, Wood River until her retirement at the age of 82. Luella was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Wood River. Luella enjoyed quilting, cooking and traveling. Luella was also preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters. Burial was in the Cedarview Cemetery at Doniphan. Published in The Grand Island Independent on 4/26/2011
