Whitney Messenger Thursday, July 4, 1974 Greald Walton Shelley, Sr., his wife, Barbara Ann and their 16 year old daughter Sherri Ann Shelley, died instantly in a truck-auto collison near Abilene Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Whitney, rev. Don Worthington of Seagraves officiating. Interment was in the Hillcrest Garden of Memory near Hillsboro. The fatal car-truck smash-up occurred on Highway 277 toward San Angelo. Investigating officers said the truck, driven by London D. Seals, 22, of Encino, went up over the car and rolled it several hundred feet. Mr. Shelley, a native of Whitney, had recently been appointed Superintendent of Schools at Winters and had moved to Winters from Seagraves about ten days prior to the accident. He had been with the Seagraves School District 27 years and had been Superintendent there since 1967. A 1939 graduate of Itasca High School. Shelley attended Hillsboro Junior College and graduated from North Texas State University in 1947. He recieved his masters degree from Eastern New Mexico University at Portales. He served as presidentof Seagraves Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club and was chairman of the Deacons of the First Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, Gerald Walton Shelley Jr. of Psadena, Texas; his parents Mr. and Mrs. L.O. Shelley of Hillsboro; a brother, Joe Shelley of Toronto, Canada; one granddaughter.
