Lycurgus W. Broocks was the son of Gen. Travis Green Broocks and Elizabeth Broocks. Lycurgus married Emma Alston Border,b 8-13-1849, San Augustine, TX , d.8-12-1923, Washington DC,: daughter of Col. John Pelham Border, b. 1821 England and Catherine Elizabeth Harding Border.(When Catherine husband died, John P. Border, she married Oran m. Roberts who was a professor of law at the University of Texas). Emma married (2)James Andrew Arnall of VA. Lycurgus and Emma had the following children: *Emma Broocks, b.7-18-1870, d. 5-30-1941, long time Federal Government Employee, Washington, DC. Never married, Pianist. *Kate Broocks, b.10-12-1871, d. 1-30-1957, Pianist and teacher of piano. Married William David Bates, b.7-16-1869, d. 6-17-1932, Attorney at Law, Texas company, Houston. They had the following children; Kate Harding Bates(Parker), William Ernest Bates, and Clara Elizabeth Bates(Nisbet).(source; Historical Southern Families Vol VII)--The Kate Broocks Bates Award For Historical Research The Bates Award is given annually for a significant piece of historical research dealing with any phase of Texas history prior to 1900. Lycurgus W. Broocks was in the civil war and served with the 27th Regiment, Texas cavalry(Whitifield's Legion)1st Texas Legion. He rose to the rank of a Captain.
