Bio

Elizabeth H. Broocks was the daughter of Elizabeth A. Morris Broocks and General Travis Green Broocks, first postmaster of San Augustine who came to the region in 1838. During the Córdova Rebellion in 1838, Broocks was Captain of the San Augustine Volunteer Militia. In 1844 President Sam Houston ordered Broocks to Shelby County with 600 men to assist in putting down the Regulator-Moderator War. Broocks quelled the troubles, while he won the title "General." In 1846 he constructed the first brick building in San Augustine. He became a member of the Redland Masonic Lodge No. 3, of which he was senior warden in 1847, worshipful master in 1849, and treasurer in 1855. Broocks b. 1845 The Border and Broocks name came to command respect, and the families made many substantial contributions to the business and social life of San Augustine, and elsewhere. Elizabeth H. Broocks married George Border(from England), settled later in San Augustine, TX. Elizabeth's father and his brother John Border arrived by a ship named the "Great Britain" on 12 Aug 1833 in the New York harbor in America along with the rest of the Border family. Their port of departure was Liverpool. George Border served in the civil war as an officer, 2nd Lieutenant, and his uncle, John P. Border was a colonel in the civil war. They were parents of the following children: *May Border - married Matthew S. Polk in San Augustine, TX and later settled in Greer Co. OK. *Mattie(Millie)Martha Elizabeth Border - married James Marcus Burleson (b.1857) on Sep 28, 1888. *George Border - became a prominent Doctor in OK. *Lecurgus(Curg) Border -single; died in San Augustine, TX on May 1904. *Cora Border -(b. Jun 28, 1873, d.Jun 18,1950) 1st marriage: Elisha Roberts; 2nd marriage: Dr Withers; 3rd marriage: D. M. (Dock) Parker.
