Bio
Doyce Dee Baber and his twin sister Lois Lee Baber were born February 16, 1920, in Umpire, Arkansas (Howard County) to William Jefferson 'Bill' Baber (1876-1960) and Zella Rosmond Plunkett (1881-1951). Doyce's twin sister lived only six months. Doyce was the youngest son of 12 children and at the age of four, traveled by covered wagon to Bokchito, Oklahoma, with his parents, his brothers, Vernon and Lealon; and his sisters, Flora, Eltha, Odessa, Gladys, and Nova. He went to grade schools in the Bokchito and Bennington areas and attended Bennington High School. In 1930, Doyce and his parents were living in Bokchito, Oklahoma (Bryan County). Doyce Dee was age 10, and his father was age 53, a farmer, born in Arkansas, and his mother was age 47, born in Mississippi. Doyce had five siblings living in the household, all born in Arkansas: Flora A., age 28; Vernon J., age 23; Gladys L., age 17; Lealon R., age 14; and Nova J., age 7. Also living in the household was Doyce's paternal grandfather, Robert H. Baber, age 79, a widower. Doyce enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 24, 1942 for the duration of World War II. He indicated that his marital status was single, that he had one year of highschool, and that he was 68 inches tall and weighed 151 pounds. He received his basic training at Camp Walters, Texas, and was transferred to San Diego, California for additional training. He next went to Camp Heeia, Hawaii for Jungle Training School and on June 2, 1944, boarded the U.S.S. Monterrey as a part of the 149th Infantry in a convoy enroute to the Philippines where he spent his entire wartime service. Doyce died at age 60 on April 23, 1980 in Bokchito, and was buried in the Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma (Bryan County).
