Bio

Big Timber Pioneer, June 23, 1949 Zeleny Funeral Held Friday Funeral services for Anton Zeleny, 72, who died June 13 at the state hospital in Warm Springs where he had been receiving treatment for six weeks were held from the Evangelical United Brethren church Friday afternoon. Rev. F. Everal Wines officiated. Pallbearers were Harold Boe, W. K. Amery, Hans Gerwitz, Gerritt Scholten, W. G. Robinson, and A. E. Bieber. Interment was in Mountain View. Mr. Zeleny was born February 27, 1877, at Chastava, Bohemia, and came to the United States as a child with his mother, brothers and sisters. They first settled at Bruno, Nebr. Mr. Zeleny left Bruno at the age of 14, locating at Omaha, Neb., where he served his apprenticeship in the butcher trade under an older brother. He opened his first meat market in Wisner Neb., and there he met Louise Showalter. They were married on May 21, 1908, shortly afterwards settling at Sheridan, Wyo., where Mr. Zeleny opened a meat market. After operating markets in Sheridan, and in Lodge Grass for several years the family came to Big Timber in 1931, and Mr, Zeleny took over operation of the City Meat market, the present Fowell-Niemi Market, and with the help of his sons operated it until 1942 when failing health forced his retirement. Besides his widow, Mr. Zeleny is survived by a daughter, Mrs. H. M. Haas of Livingston, and four sons, George A. Zeleny of Cody, Wyo., Arthur Zeleny of Spokane Wash., Elvin Zeleny of Oakland, Calif., and Howard Zelany of Visalia, Calif. One son, Walter, preceded him in death. All of the children were here for the services. Contributor: Julia Kinsey (48922386) •
