Leonard J. Podany, 79, of Fremont, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Arbor Manor Living Center in Fremont. Leonard was born May 24, 1931, to Louis & Emily (Fuxa) Podany in Leigh. He grew up at Schuyler, NE and was a graduate of Schuyler High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from June 25, 1951 to June 14, 1955. He served aboard the USS Carpenter. Leonard married Bettie Eckstein on May 14, 1960, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Schuyler. He worked at the Schuyler Power Plant until moving to Fremont in 1965. He was employed by the Fremont Department of Utilities until his retiring in 1993. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and wood working. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1497 of Fremont. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 200 of Fremont and the Western Fraternal Life Association at Morse Bluff, formerly ZCBJ Lodge 93 of Schuyler. Survivors include his wife, Bettie; son, Mark Podany of Vermillion, S.D.; daughters, Denise (and husband, Stanley) Blair of Granby, Colo., Teresa Podany of Hastings; four grandchildren; sisters, Lorraine Vidlak of David City, Louise (and husband, Myron) Klug of Richland, and Laverna Whitt of Nickerson. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lucille Pfeifer. The Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Fremont with the Rev. Ron Battiato officiating. Vigil service with Knights of Columbus rosary will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Moser Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with family present from 2-3 p.m. and 4-5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial, with military graveside services, will be 2 p.m. Monday at the Schuyler Cemetery in Schuyler. Memorials may be made to St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.
