Bio

Herald Coaster, June 7, 1993: Services for August D. Zurek, 76, former mayor of Wallis, will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Guardian Angel Church, with Reverend Anthony Stredny officiating. Zurek, who was born and raised in Wallis, graduated from Guardian Angel High School in 1934. Zurek married Pearl Orsak in 1941. Zurek served in the Army in World War II where he received a purple heart. He worked as a plant operator at Duval Sulfur Company for 34 years before retiring. He was mayor of Wallis for 4 years, and a city councilman for 4 years. Zurek was a member of the American Legion Post #200 where he served as past chaplain and adjutant, and a member of the Catholic workman. Zurek is survived by his wife, Pearl Zurek; his son, Malcom Zurek and wife, Nancy, of Rosenberg; sister, Annie Holecek and her husband, John, of Wallis; brother, Julius Zurek and wife, Lucille, of Wallis; and grandchildren, Jon, Julie, and Philip Zurek of Rosenberg. Pallbearers will be Jon Zurek, Philip Zurek, Lawrence Holecek, Bill Schultz, Neal Adamcik, and Frank Huvar. Honorary pallbearers are Julie Zurek and Theresa Zurek. The rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday at Knesek. Memorials may be sent to Wallis Fire Department.
