Ruth Alene Carroll Hughes, age 82, born on the 9th of December 1928 in Del Rio, Texas, passed away peacefully on the 20th of January 2011. She moved to the Houston Heights as a young girl with her parents and two sisters and then considered herself a native Houstonian. Ruthie was a drum major for the Reagan High School Redcoats and cherished friends made in her school days and kept in touch until the end. She met Gene Claude Hughes and they were married on the 16th of June 1948. They were married for 38 years and had a son and two daughters. They enjoyed traveling with their family, David, Deborah, and Laura; as well as friends. They enjoyed entertaining, dancing, and being active in their church. They were longtime members of Chapelwood UMC Wedding Band Class. She was still very active in her church, volunteering at MAM, DRT, CRT, and researching family genealogy. Most of all, family and friends were of the greatest importance to her. She is survived by her son, David Hughes and wife, Flo; daughters, Deborah and husband, Greg Blauser, and Laura and husband, Roy Knowles. Mamaw, as she was known, is survived by her grandchildren, Hunter Hughes, Greg Milton, Brent Blauser and wife, Anne; great granddaughter Audrey; Derek Blauser and fianc? Sarah Wiechkoske, Trey Blauser, Austen Knowles, and Logan Knowles. She is also survived by sisters, Dorothy and her husband, Erwin Fiedler, and Elizabeth Deterling. She had many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved and cared for. She was our Mamaw. She was our eternal optimist, quintessential hostess and good cook, thoughtful giver, ice cream grandma, cheerleader, picture of kindness and love. She loved her family and we loved her. Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from four o'clock in the afternoon until six o'clock in the evening on Sunday, the 23rd of January, in the Drawing Room of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston. A memorial service is to be conducted at four o'clock in the afternoon on Monday, the 24th of January, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay Street in Houston, where Dr. Scott W. Endress is to officiate. Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston. For those desiring, contributions in memory of Mrs. Hughes may be directed to Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM), 1625 Blalock Rd., Houston, TX, 77080.
