Bio

Elizabeth Francis Carroll Deterling, an amazingly spirited lady with a compassionate soul, passed peacefully October 30, 2023. She was 90 years old and led a remarkable life. Born in Houston, Texas in 1933, Elizabeth grew up the youngest of three sisters in the Houston Heights. She graduated from Reagan High School and went on to get her Bachelor of Science at Baylor University. She married Eddie Deterling, Jr. September 1955 and moved to Schulenburg, Texas, where she raised three children. During her time in Schulenburg, she worked as a medical assistant, then as a bank teller and eventually in the insurance industry at Deterling and Son Insurance. Upon the death of her husband, she took over running the agency until her retirement in 1998. Elizabeth was frequently a leader and an organizer. She was very active in the community and supported many local organizations. She was very involved in many school events and functions. She supported many charity functions as well through the Shriners organization. Later she became a member of the Schulenburg Lions Club. Throughout her life she was an active participant in the St. Paul United Church of Christ. She ultimately became an officer of the church and even supported the national organization. She was always willing to lend a helping hand and frequently went to visit people recovering from illness or other conditions and helped to transport people needing medical treatment to specialty clinics outside Schulenburg. She loved to travel and experience new things. She frequently planned complex family vacations to destinations including Hawaii, Florida, California, Yellowstone National Park, Boston, and New York City. She took the family to Big Bend in 1975 where they rode donkeys across the Rio Grande, and later to the World's Fair in New Orleans in 1984. Throughout her life she loved to go to the beach in Galveston and swim in the Gulf of Mexico. She enjoyed going to Round Top and listening to concerts at Festival Hill. She also enjoyed the Texas Hill Country immensely and spent many days at a house owned with her two sisters on the Guadalupe river. Later in life she enjoyed a cruise through Canada and Alaska. After retirement in 2003, she moved back to the city of her birth, Houston. She wanted to be close to her daughter and son who lived there as well as her two sisters and their extended families. She enjoyed spending time with her family and seeking out new adventures in the city. She went to a variety of shows and performances and became an organizer of group events at the places she lived. Elizabeth is survived by her children, Keith Alan Deterling, Suzy Hartgrove, and Steven Paul Deterling; her grandson, Michael Karl Deterling; and her great grandchildren, Scarlett Deterling and Amelia Deterling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie Deterling, Jr.; and her sisters, Ruth Hughes and Dorothy Fiedler. She will be laid to rest in City Cemetery alongside her loving husband. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon at Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg. There will be a graveside service at 1:30 p.m. at the Schulenburg City Cemetery.
