Fredrick Allen Uphoff of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born to Fredrick Henry and Alice Lewis Uphoff in Stapleton, Neb., on Jan. 27, 1925. He attended schools in North Platte, Neb., graduating from North Platte High School in May 1942. He attended St. John's College in Winfield, Kan., for one year, entering the U.S. Navy V-12 program in June of 1943 at Washburn University. Following service in World War II as a Navy supply officer in the western Pacific, he returned to Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., where he graduated in 1948. Most of his career following graduation was spent with Equifax Inc., retiring as a senior vice president. His last assignment was in Winston-Salem with Gay & Taylor Inc., a subsidiary of Equifax, locating here in 1970. He has been an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, serving as church treasurer, chairman of the St. Paul's place board and a member of the St. Paul's senior adult committee. He has been a member of Kiwanis International for more than 50 years, serving as president of Kiwanis clubs in Winston-Salem and San Diego, Calif. He served as a vice president and executive board member of Old Hickory Council of the Boy Scouts of America, from whom he received the Silver Beaver Award. He was past president and board member of Cricket Craftsmen Inc., and was a volunteer counselor for the Small Business Center at Forsyth Technical College. An avid tennis player, he was also an enthusiastic supporter of Atlanta Braves baseball, Nebraska Cornhuskers football, and Duke Blue Devils basketball. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Fredrick Allen Uphoff Jr. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Susan Thompson Uphoff; a daughter, Emily Susan Uphoff of Marysville, Wash.; a son, Kurt Thompson Uphoff and daughter-in-law Carol Brooks Uphoff of Chapel Hill; four grandchildren, Carl Fredrick Schill of Cashmere, Wash., Susan Colleen Vollandt of Roanoke, Va., Frederick Nathan Uphoff of North Hollywood, Calif., and Emily Carol Uphoff of Chapel Hill; and one great grandchild, Jonah Charles Schill of Cashmere. Also surviving are two sisters, Lorna Uphoff Miller of Tyler, Texas, and Joyce Uphoff Smith of Lincoln, Neb.; seven nephews; two nieces; and a number of grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, with private interment in the church graveyard at St. Paul's. The family will receive friends in the Colhoun Room at St. Paul's after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Paul's Episcopal Church for St. Paul's Place or The Augustine Project, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or to the Old Hickory Council of Boy Scouts of America, 6600 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.
