2nd husband of my 2nd Great-Grandmother, Nancy R. CRENSHAW Brashears ∼ From the "Biographical Souvenir of the State of Texas" Isom W. Welch, an enterprising agriculturist of Grayson county, is a native of Missouri, having been born in Jackson county, that State, February 9, 1826. His father, James Welch, was born in Kentucky, served in her Indian wars, but early settled in Jackson county, Missouri, where he died in 1854, at the age of 87 years. His wife, Ruth, was a daughter of William Cox, a native of Kentucky, who moved to Lafayette county, Missouri, but who died in Arkansas. Mrs. Ruth Welch died in 1856, aged about 75 years, and the mother of the following children -- James, Martha, Sallie, Ruthie, Isom W. and Zachariah. The grandfather of our subject was Walter Welch, a native of Ireland. Isom W. Welch arrived in Texas Aug 24, 1856, and bought his present farm of 260 acres, on which he has ever since resided, and 200 acres of which he has now under cultivation. His principle crop is cotton, but he nevertheless does mixed farming. The improvements have all been made by himself, and his home is now one of the most pleasant in the county. During the late war between the States, Mr. Welch served in the Confederate army, having enlisted in Montague county. After 6 months service in the State he was taken to Kansas, and was at Ft. Leavenworth when the final surrender was made. His brothers, James and Zachariah, were also in the Confederate service. Mr. Welch has been 3 times married. By his first wife he is the father of -- William, Martha, Jane, Ruthie, Angeline, Matilda, James, and Isom. The maiden name of the second Mrs. Welch was Susah D. Crenshaw, a daughter of John Crenshaw, of Jackson Co., MO. To this union were born two children -- Martha and Susie. The third marriage of Mr. Welch was to a widow with 6 children. Her maiden name was Susan C. Nowlin, and she is a daughter of Sherrod Nowlin, and this last marriage has been blessed by the birth of the following children -- Jacob, Louis, Ellen, Joanna, Ollie, Cordie, Julia, and Zachariah. Thus it will be seen that Mr. Welch has reared no less than 24 children.
