Obit Normangee Star Vol. XXXI #52 December 24, 1943 Gone up to his Coronation "Long he lingered, but at last Has come a summons from on High And his soul, with angel escort, Has winged its flight Beyond the sky," Concluding an illness of nearly two years, Mr. R. McDonald passed away at his home last Sunday morning at 11:25 o'clock. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. His pastor, Rev. C. E. Bullock, was assisted by Elder Richard Holloman and by Rev. R. N. Davis. Elder Holleman read the 23rd Psalm from the deceased's own Bible, and spoke of its comforting truths. Bro. Davis led in prayer and also read the First Psalm, emphasizing his life long habits of Bible study and paralleling of his own life with its sacred precepts. Bro. Bullock spoke at length of Mr. McDonald's faithful life's service to his home and family, to his community and church. Richard McDonald was born Sept. 28, 1872 in Brazos County. He was a graduate of Baylor University and taught school for many years. At one time he was President of a Baptist Academy in Bryan. For the past 30 years he and his family have resided in Normangee, engaged in farming and business pursuits. He was married to Miss Mollie Bennett, who with two children, is left to mourn his departure. A son Martell McDonald of Big Spring, and a daughter, Mary Evelyn McDonald of Houston, where she is teaching. Two granddaughters, Mary Margaret and Doris Ann; one brother, Dr. George McDonald of Plainview; one half brother, William Ryan, and one half sister, Mrs. Ella Bennett of Fort Worth. Interment was in Hopewell Cemetery, Davis Cozart Funeral Home directing. Pall bearers were: Percy Westmoreland and Allen Skains, J. B. Batson, V. C. McDonald, Odis Ellison and Mac Leon Bennett with the deacons, Jack Ellison, R. B. Cash and W. H. Holleman. Many exquite floral offering attested the love and esteem of the departed one. "Know ye not that there is a Prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?" declared King David and these words may aptly be used here. Great in simplicity; great in kindness; great in gentle dignity; great in curtesy; great in service in every relationshup of life, where he might serve. He served as deacon an Superintendent of Sunday School for many years; and his influence will live on in the hearts of namy who were blessed by inspiration to higher and nobler living. Concluding the songs by the choir of "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me." "Some Where the Sun is Shining" and others that he loved, the pianist gave as a recessional, in softly muted tones. "Sunrise Tomorrow." as friends passed by the flower banked bier for one last look at his beloved face. "He has laid down his armour and gone to the Home above.
