Bio

Born in Perry County, Ohio, he and his family moved to Cedar County, Iowa in about 1854, in a Covered Wagon..his mother Catharine dying soon after they arrived. His father James Croghan at age 59 joined the Union Army during the Civil War (37th Iowa Infantry Regiment) as well as two brothers Joshua (2nd Iowa Infantry Regiment)and Davis (35th Iowa Infantry Regiment). He left Cedar County married Elizabeth Mae Pruett and had several children.. loosing his son Hezekiah, nicknamed "Babe" near Correctionville, Iowa in a corn thresher accident in 1901, just days after marrying. His daughter Selona died of influenza in 1918 in Minnesota.... Hezekiah was nicknamed "Ky" and was a close family friend of his brother Joshua's family. Hezekiah lived near Missouri Valley eventually ending up in Lewis, Iowa.... In September 1917, our beloved Elizabeth died,, they were living on a farm near California Junction, Iowa. Hezekiah sold the farm then moved to Fremont, Nebraska...... Hezekiah remarried a total of 3 more wives, the last being Mary (Darger) Conrad. He outlived them all.....He lived in a large house in Lewis, Iowa. His son, William O. Croghan, cared for him in the last years of his life....On his 100th birthday at Lewis, Iowa, he played baseball. His middle name Springer is very curious... in the 1850 Census in Perry County Ohio,,, Croghans are listed, as well as numerous Springers,, one who was named Hezekiah,,, His Aunt Jemima, married a Springer...... Another mystery of time.... Long rumored to have hidden his wealth,,,,,it was never found....but it has been said a neighbor digging near the property line at the site of where Hezekiah's house was in Lewis, Iowa, found a coffee can with money in it....But,,,rumor has it that the Nebraska Family spent it on horses..... Pronounced Croghan as: Crow-gun
