John's wife, Dr. Polly couldn't read or write, but learned her medical knowledge from books John read to her. She always rode a white horse when she went to tend to the sick. They together had 13 children. 3 died young, and 1 was brutly killed by Indians. Suggested edit: There is absolutely no way they had a child "brutally killed by Indians." There were NO Indian attacks in all Western North Carolina after 1783, the end of the Revolutionary War. The Cherokee never fought against settlers after the Revolutionary War. No other American Indians were in WNC. This is an inaccurate myth or story with no basis in historical fact. Contributor: Jennie Jones Giles Just to extend on the above suggested edit, the list of her children has only 3 children dying before the age of 4, the dates are well past the known dates of native American removals (AKA Trail of Tears). This seems to be a total fabrication in order to enflame or stoke emotions.
