Bio

A hard-working, very honest man: When Emery and Geneva Murphy eloped from Burwell Nebraska to Sacramento California in May 1942, their 1932 Plymouth broke an oil line while driving through Nevada. They coasted into a deserted highway department maintenance yard, where they ‘borrowed' a five-quart can of oil. He plugged the line, put in the oil, and they continued on their way. On and off over the years Emery thought about the ‘loan' he took out as a 19 year old newlywed anxious to get on with this trip. He said the discomfort about the incident grew, prompting him thirty-eight and a half years later to write a letter to The Nevada Transportation Department. In it he said, "As a Christian, it's time I repaid you for the use of the oil, then 25 cents a quart, now a dollar, so have enclosed a check for $5.00 to make payment." He continued, "It's better late than never." When this letter and check were received, it caused such amazement that soon word got out to the local newspaper, then it was picked up by the wire service and reprinted in several newspapers across the country including "The Times News," in Twin Falls Idaho where Emery was currently living. It brought much embarrassment when it was brought to light and seen by those he worked with. He simply wanted to quietly do what he believed was right, and hadn't expected that everyone in town would see it. It was also printed in "The Burwell Tribune," his home town newspaper in Nebraska. They had one child, Marie His death was from a heart attack
