Carrol J. Tetschner, 85, of Burwell, Nebraska passed away at Community Memorial Health Center on August 28, 2016. Carrol was born July 28, 1931, in Garfield County, Nebraska, the son of Jack and Nora (Abbott) Tetschner. He attended Willow Springs School and Burwell High School. At 17 years of age, Carrol joined the United States Navy. He served in both the United States Navy and the United States Army for a total of 20 years. Carrol served as an aviator and meteorologist, and was a veteran of both the Korean Conflict and the war in Vietnam. He flew both helicopter and fixed wing (surveillance) aircraft in excess of 200 combat missions. Carrol was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Bronze Star, and Commendation Medals, several were multiple awards and three medals were for valor. Carrol retired from the US Army in 1968. In civilian life he operated a "U Pick"orchard in Florida. One of the highlights of his farming experience was experimenting with different fruit varieties. Included in this were 16 varieties each of, figs, muscadine grapes, and citrus. In earlier years Carrol pursued several hobbies, among those were mountain climbing, SCUBA diving, cave exploring, and aerobatic flying. In later life he enjoyed observing nature, particularly birds of the raptor species. He also enjoyed taking part in cribbage and scrabble tournaments. Carrol was a resident of Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell for the last several years of his life. He truly appreciated the dedication of the staff and also the friendships he developed with the staff and residents during those years. Carrol grew up in the Assembly of God Church and was baptized as a teenager. Carrol was united in marriage to Hazel Knight of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, on December 27, 1951. Hazel accompanied Carrol overseas and taught military dependent children on three continents. Hazel preceded Carrol in death in 1970. Carrol is survived by: a brother, Gerald and wife Marilyn Tetschner; nephews; niece; great nieces and nephews. Carrol took great joy in also counting, as his extended family, great great nieces and nephews. Carrol was preceded in death by: his parents; his wife Hazel; brother, Emery, and wife Geneva, Tetschner; sister Dorothy, and husband Clarence, Birch; and niece, Susan (Birch) Depew. Carrol's remains were cremated. Burial of the ashes took place at Cottonwood Cemetery in Burwell. Obituary information from Hitchcock Funeral Home of Burwell, Nebraska.
