Bio

Seventy-five years ago James McAllister was born in Ireland and died on his farm west of Decatur, June 26, 1916. He was one of the many boys in blue who proved so brave upon the field of battle as in December 1863 enlisted in the 3rd Wisconsin Infan- try and at the close of the war in 1865 received his honorable discharge. In 1882 he was married to Ida Van Brunt and to this union ten children were born eight of whom with their mother live to mourn her loss.. namely as follows: Helen Hillman Weeping Water, Nellie Jones. Lyous Grace Miller of Decatur, and James Frank, Will, Dewey and Jack. He was also a grandfather to thirteen children. The flag which we often see floating from our flagpole was bought by him and presented to the grand army post, of which he became a member in 1882 with one condition, that when the last of the post has passed away the flag must be returned to the family. With his death the family lost a dutiful husband father, the G. A. R, is one less in their few members and the vicinity has lost a kind and help- ful neighbor. The funeral services were held at the home and were conducted by the Rev. C. E. Bowen, pastor of the M. E. Church of Decatur, Saturday July 1, at 10 a. m. and he was laid to rest in the Lyons cemetery. The most of the Decatur G. A. R. Post were present as well as a number of the relief corp. Mr. McAllister was one of the early settlers of Burt county, he knew all about the hardships of pioneer life and he has been one of the few who stayed with the goods and won out Setting a splendid example of thrift and faithfulness The Decatur (Nebraska) Herald Thursday, July 6, 1916
