William (Bill) McAllister was born June 5, 1896 on a farm west of Decatur. Bill's grandparents, Margaret (Murphy, McAllister) and William Powers originally homesteaded the property, and according to family memories, lived in a cave in the plum thicket, while they were building their home. Bill's father, James McAllister was born in Ireland and fought in the Civil War, before moving west to Nebraska. In Decatur he met Ida Van Brunt, who had arrived in 1878 on the riverboat the Damsel, as a member of the Dan Rice Circus, which sank near Onawa. They were married in 1880 and moved to the farm west of town. Bill grew up on the original home place and attended Elm Creek School. Living nearby was the Naaman Little family, and their daughter Pearl became Bill's wife in 1925. They had 7 children and continued to farm for about 20 years before moving in to Decatur. Bill worked as a laborer for the W.P.A and at the Cudahy Packing house in Sioux City; he was also the custodian at the Decatur Public School. He loved sports, especially baseball, football and going to the wrestling matches in Omaha. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Obituary, published in the Burt County Plaindealer, in Tekamah, Nebraska, on June 20, 1974. Funeral services were held Friday for native Decaturite William McAllister. Mr. McAllister died June 11th in Sioux City, where he was receiving nursing care. He was 78 years old. Elder Dale R. Wolfe assisted by Elder Clement Sweet officiated at the rites. The ministry of music was provided by Mrs. George Brewer and Mrs. Glen miller, the organist was Beulah Halstead. William (Bill) McAllister was born June 5, 1896 in Decatur, to Mr. and Mrs. James McAllister. On October 17, 1925, he was united in marriage to Pearl Irene Little. They became the parents of seven children. Mr. McAllister, a member of the RLDS Church, spent his entire life in the Decatur community. He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl, daughter Pauline Wanamaker and two sons, Jerry (Nanny) and Carrol. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Alma (Ella) Serbeck, of Columbia, MO, and three sons, William D. and Naaman Paul of Sioux City, and Donald E. of Branson, MO. Also, a brother Jack, of Tekamah. Pallbearers were Gerald Bacon, Harold Bacon, Clark Beck, Victor Webster, Kenneth Wilson and Johnie Beard. Interment was at Hillcrest Cemetery.
