From The Palmer Journal, June 4, 1953, page 1, transcribed by Linda Berney: FUNERAL SERVICES HELD FOR ELZA VANDEGRIFT - Funeral services for Elza Edward Vandegrift were held last Friday afternoon in the Church of Christ in Palmer, conducted by Owen Wilmot and burial was made in the Palmer cemetery. [funeral details....] Elza Edward Vandegrift, son of Evans and Martha Vandegrift, was born April 23, 1877 near Dunlap, Kansas, and passed away in a hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 26, 1953, age 76 years, 1 mo and 3 days. His parents brought the family to Cherry county, Nebraska when he was 9 years old. He grew to manhood and was married there. His wife and a daughter, Mrs. Beth Bierhaus, preceded him in death, and later he and his family moved to Merrick County where he lived for a number of years. He also resided in St. Paul and Gering, Nebraska. About 12 years ago he moved to Idaho. He leaves to mourn his passing 4 sons, Evans of Salt Lake City, Howard of Omaha, Robert of Raymond, Nebraska, and Elza K. of Nampa, Idaho; three daughters, Neva White of Los Angeles, Letha Bahensky of Omaha, and Patsy Defries of Nampa, Idaho; five sisters, Mrs. Stella Barbee of Stapelton, Nebr., Mrs. Lillian Keller, Palmer, Mrs. Myrtle McCain and Mrs. Nellie Edwards of Long Beach, Calif., and Mrs. Alice Bellville of Omaha; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also nieces and nephews and a host of friends. ~~~~~ Per obit of daughter Elizabeth Bierhaus, Elza's first wife died about 1907 and then he married Bertha Semple.
