Bio

Evans Clarence Vandegrift, 97, died June 13, 1999 at the Sandy Regional Health Care Center in Sandy, Utah from complications following a stroke. He was born November 12, 1901 in Cherry County, Nebraska to Elza Edward and Julia Emma Colby Vandegrift. He grew up and was educated in Nebraska, beginning his teaching career in 1920. He taught twenty years in Nebraska and Wyoming before moving to Salt Lake City in January 1944, where he continued teaching until his retirement from Bryant Junior High School in June 1967. He continued as a teacher/superintendant in Nevada for five more years. From the early 1950's, at the beginning of the uranium boom, until 1992 when he was prospecting for gold in Idaho he pursued his mining passion/interest in Utah, Nevada, and Idaho. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salt Lake City as well as the First Baptist Church of Burley, Idaho, where he was ordained as a deacon in 1990. His last church membership was at the First Baptist Church, Bountiful, Utah. He is survived by his faithful and loving wife, Lois M. Reynolds Vandegrift. They were married on June 16, 1926 and were just three days short of celebrating their seventy-third wedding anniversary when he died. He is survived by brother, Robert, Nebraska; sisters, Letha Bahensky (Clint) Arizona, Patsy Deffries (James), Washington, and Jackie Benson (Tom),Idaho. He is also survived by his children: Shirley J. Westwood (Dale), Robert L. (Nancy), Phyllis E. Christensen Farrell, Lois M. Duncan (Eugene), Marilyn J. Shaw Purser (Edward), and Julia E. McCarty Burke Vandegrift; twenty-five grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, brothers Howard and Elza K. (Buddy), and sisters Neva and Elizabeth. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 18, 1999 at 12:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, 1915 South Orchard Drive, Bountiful, Utah. A viewing for friends and family will be held on Thursday, June 17, 1999 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Redwood Memorial Estates Mortuary, 6500 South Redwood Road (1700 West), Taylorsville, Utah. Interment at Redwood Memorial Estates. Published in the Deseret News on June 16, 1999.
