Rachel "Rae" Jensen, 89, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2010, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island. Rae was born Sept. 19, 1920, at Ironwood, Mich., to Matt and Hilma (Pelto) Walkama. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen A. Jensen. Survivors sons and daughters-in-law, Allen R. and Doris Jensen of Lincoln, David and Patricia K. Jensen of Joshua Tree, Calif., Duane (Gus) Jensen of Lincoln, Michael and Elizabeth Jensen of Lincoln, Mark and Patricia A. Jensen of Hastings; daughter and son-in-law, Vivian and Patrick Barry of Papillion; brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Helmi Walkama of Erie, Pa, granddaughters and grandsons-in-laws, Melissa and Rob Powers, Brenda and Matt McNiff, Renee and Derek Clark, Hilary and Dan Conway, Tonya and Travis Fincher, Tana and Sean Wilson, Amy Jensen, Leah Jensen and Kiesa Jensen; grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Rob and Carol Moore, Shane and Tracy Moore, Michael and Krisa Moore, Chris and Stephanie Jensen, Jordan Jensen; 32 great-grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. Rae will also be missed by her husband's sisters, brothers and their spouses. Rachel graduated from Luther L. Wright High School in Ironwood. Following high school, she received a civilian appointment as a clerk for the Army War Bond Office in Chicago. She married Allen A. Jensen on May 10, 1945, in Jacksonville, Fla., after his return from the Pacific Theatre for additional training. After her husband's discharge from the Marine Corps they made their home in Lincoln. He was then appointed to the Nebraska State Patrol in 1946 and served in Grand Island as his first assignment. In 1953, they were transferred to Central City and then in 1965 he was transferred back to Grand Island where they made their home. Mr. Jensen died on April 13, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a granddaughter, Michelle Renee Moore and a sister and brother-in-law, Violet and Robert Westergaurd. Her main concern was the welfare of her family and extended family, which all brought much interest and happiness for Rae. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially after his retirement. She also took pleasure in her hobby as an artist, belonging to the Grand Island Sketch Club and the Grand Island Art Club as well as their Wednesday night painting group. She had devoted much time doing volunteer teacher-aid work at the former St. Mary's Elementary School while her children were attending. She continued volunteering in the art department of Central Catholic High School for many years. She also taught Religious Education classes while they had been members of St. Mary's Cathedral. She was an active participant of the Ladies of St. Leo's and the Catholic Daughters organization. She enjoyed visiting with friends, sewing, reading and working in her flower garden.
